2010 Archaeological Field School at Catawba Old Town

Have you ever wanted to participate in an archaeological excavation? This course will give you the opportunity to do just that while earning six hours of college credit, and it also will fulfill one of your requirements for UNC's new Major in Archaeology. UNC's 2010 summer field school will be held at the late 18th-century Catawba Indian village of Old Town located near Indian Land in Lancaster County, South Carolina (just south of Charlotte). This settlement was inhabited during the decades before and after the American Revolution, and previous field school excavations here have yielded significant evidence about the emergence and endurance of the modern Catawba Nation. Our goal is to learn more about this community by uncovering artifacts and traces of houses and other features. It promises to be an exciting project.
