Research Laboratories of Archaeology

This is a mosaic view of a four-by-four-meter block containing Features 4, 5, 6, and 7 (north is at top). It was created by taking vertical photographs of each of the 11 one-by-one-meter excavation units and piecing them together. All four pits were barely visible at the top-of-subsoil surface. They were numbered in clockwise fashion, starting with Feature 4, a large circular pit with a large rectangular rock at the top (bottom right). Just northwest of Feature 4 is a disturbance that was interpreted as two overlapping rectangular pit (Features 5 and 6). Both were relatively shallow and contained very few artifacts. To the east of these features was a large, rectangular cellar pit (Feature 7) with three large rocks at the top. While only faintly visible at the top-of-subsoil surface, it was filled with relatively rich deposits of soil and artifacts, including an iron hoe, the base of a large case bottle, and numerous fragments of Catawba-made pots. As with Feature 2, it is believed to date to the 1770s.
