Research Laboratories of Archaeology

This is a mosaic view of the excavation block containing Features 2 and 3; it measures four meters (N-S) by three meters (E-W) (north is at top). It was created by taking vertical photographs of each of the eight one-by-one-meter excavation units and piecing them together. Feature 2 is a deep, rectangular cellar pit that would have been placed in the floor of a log house and used for storage. It contained numerous artifacts, including Catawba pottery, English-made pottery, broken glass, glass beads, discarded metal implements, and a few coins, and it likely was filled in the 1770s. Feature 3 represents a probable grave, but does not appear to be directly associated with the cellar given its orientation. It was not excavated and thus cannot be dated.
