Research Laboratories of Archaeology

This is a mosaic view of the excavation block at Locus #2 and contains Features 1, 2, and 3 (north is at top). It was created by taking vertical photographs of each of the 26 one-by-one-meter excavation units and piecing them together. Feature 1 is a square cellar pit that was situated in the floor of the cabin and is represented by the large, dark soil stain near the bottom of the mosaic. Feature 2 is the base of a stick-and-clay cabin chimney just north of the cellar and is the reddish-orange area. Feature 3, the small dark stain to the left of Feature 2, was a small pit that contained several large potsherds from a Catawba-made jar. The dark stain at the north edge of the excavation was a tree disturbance. It contained several artifacts dating to the period when the cabin was occupied, but it may actually post-date the cabin.
